We took a break in our hotel room while waiting for the rain to stop or at least lighten. About an hour later, the rain turned into a drizzle. As such, we decided to drive the Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach which we had skipped earlier. It's less than 15 mins drive away from town Vik.
While walking from the car park to the beach, we saw a sign board warning visitors about the danger of strong waves along the shore. In fact, we had already been warned by our hostess in Selfoss (Kristin) of such danger before we left her apartment this morning.
After reading about the fatal drowning happened here in recent years, Jerlene and Javier stayed far away from the coastline.
Reynisfjara is widely regarded as the most impressive black-sand beach in Iceland. A short walk on the beach brought us to a shallow cave called Hálsanefshellir Cave.
We were all amazed by the rock formation around us.
This place also features an amazing cliff of regular basalt columns resembling a rocky step pyramid, which is called Hálsanef.
It's really amazing to see what nature can create. We had a lot of fun climbing over those lower columns and managed to capture a few good pictures.
As mentioned earlier, the waves at Reynisfjara are especially strong and unpredictable, and fatal accidents have occurred at this beach. However, I still see people getting very close to the shore taking selfie.....sigh.......
As it started to rain again, we took some last minute shots and hurried back to our car.
