30 May 2017 - Iceland Day 5: Laufskálavarða

Our stay at Puffins Hotel in Vik came with breakfast at the dining area in the hotel.  We had a hearty breakfast before continuing our Iceland road trip.
After driving towards east from Vik village for about half an hour, we saw a large green field filled with cairns.  A cairn is a human-made pile (or stack) of stones. We decided to stop by and take a look.  This was not in my original itinerary but we did not regret making this stop.
During our past trips, we had seen such cairns at places of interest.  However, it was never at such a "big" scale.  Laufskálavarða is a lava ridge between the Hólmsá and Skálmá Rivers
According to custom, every traveler who passed through this place for the first time was to erect a cairn , so that his journey might be favorable. The Icelandic Bridges and Creeks dumped a load of pebbles on the site to allow visitors to perpetuate the tradition in the form of a multitude of small cairns.
This place is definitely worth a visit.
As it was very windy, we tried our best to take a wefie before leaving.
