16 Dec 2016 - Cruise Day 4: Maré, Yejeje Beach at New Caledonia

Today will be our first port of call after 2 days at sea.  We arrived at Maré, the second-largest of the Loyalty Islands, in the archipelago of New Caledonia, an overseas territory of France in the Pacific Ocean.
As the cruise ship was too huge to dock at the island's jetty, we had to transfer to the island by smaller ferry service.
The moment we arrived on the island, we were warmly greeted by the locals.  Not far from the jetty there was a market selling local products and handicrafts.
The main tourist spot on this island is Yejeje Beach, which was at the other side of the island.  We had to take a bus to the beach.
The bus journey from the jetty to the beach was about 30mins.  Once we reached the beach, we were very excited to see people swimming in the crystal clear water.
Jerlene and Javier had so much fun playing sands on the beach and soaking in the water.
Even if you do not want to step into the water, it was still great to simply relax on the beach, which many people did.
Along the beach, there were locals doing hair braiding for a small fee.
We spent about 2 hours at the beach before taking the bus back to the jetty.
We decided to have our late lunch back on the cruise.
